Report on The Brack

Gail and I decided to head to The Brack (787m) today and we couldn't have asked for better winter weather.
We parked the car at the Ardgartan Visitor Centre (OS Grid Reference: NN271032)on the A83 just past Arrochar in Glen Croe. We headed along the forestry path until we came to a signpost for The Brack.
This took us up a very steep track though the trees and as we gained height quickly the views really opened up. We continued until we reached a frozen river and waterfall which we had difficulty crossing. The ice was not thick enough for us to put on our crampons to cross and the fear was the ice would break and we would go slipping over the waterfall. We followed the river upstream until we managed to find a safe place to cross and we quickly picked up the path again. The path at times was icy which we managed to bypass. Eventually we reached the snow level which was close to the summit (NN245030). At the trig point the views were stunning. The sun was shining, no wind and it was quite warm for a change.
After a long lunch, which was unusual for this time of year, we decided to make this into a circular walk and pick out way down in a SW direction to the Coilessan Glen and returning to the forestry track for a long but pleasant walk back to the car.
This has been one of the best days walking all winter.
